Meet the Artist: Kassy Lopez

Artist Bio

This impressive Bigfoot ballerina with a tutu is part of the Sneaky Squatch PDX Art Hunt. Keep watching as this piece comes to life!

Kassy Lopez builds giant mythical lawn sculptures that look like they wandered out of a storybook and decided to stay awhile. Working with a sculpting material that handles like clay but cures with the strength of concrete, they create oversized creatures with a cartoon twist: a grinning Loch Ness Monster (bringing joy to Milwaukee), a dragon with attitude, and now a Bigfoot who seems more curious and full of love than cryptic.

Alongside these large‑scale outdoor works, Kassy also crafts ceramic monsters, expressive masks, and delightfully quirky butter dishes. These smaller pieces carry the same playful spirit and love of character design.

Their work celebrates imagination, humor, and the joy of stumbling upon something unexpected in an ordinary place. Whether towering over a yard or peeking around a corner, each sculpture transforms everyday spaces into tiny pockets of magic, suggesting that even the wildest creatures can feel right at home.

This sculpture began as a skeletal metal armature, built up with tin foil, wire mesh, and foam to rough out the body and establish its form and proportions. Once the structure was solid, Kassy layered it with Pal-Tiya, a sculpting material that cures to a stone-like hardness, allowing her to refine the surface, add texture, and lock in the final shape. The last stage brought the piece to life with vibrant, hand-applied paint, giving it color, depth, and personality.
