Explore a section of the Alphabet Historic District from grand homes to vintage street car commercial structures. The tour uses historic images and ephemera to highlight the neighborhood’s evolution. From early hospital clustered to grand merchant homes of the 1890s the neighborhood quadrupled in population in the post-1905 Lewis and Clark Exhibition as early electrified apartment buildings rose above the church spires. WWII pressures shifted the dynamic carving up homes into boarding houses.

St Johns was a distinct independent city absorbed by the City of Portland on two occasions; and in many ways still asserts an independent spirit. This is an eclectic mix of restaurants and small Businesses 64% of which are women owned.

All of the walking tours are designed as loops and led by local experts. The NW and SE Portland walking tours are moderate, level walks for all abilities. The N Portland / St. Johns tour offerings have a steep grade. Use a restroom prior to arriving for our Ghost Tours. Come prepared: wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a water bottle and dress for the weather. Tours are never cancelled for rain. Ask if you need to borrow gear or umbrella.
