GWPDX Presents Nerdy by Neighborhood: Spotlight on SE Hawthorne Boulevard

Oct 28
5 min read

Eat, shop, play, and embrace your inner weirdo on Portland’s geekiest boulevard.

Portland is Nerdy by Nature. And if you need proof, spend 24 hours on SE Hawthorne Boulevard, where tabletop adventurers drink craft beer, space cadets eat brunch, punk rockers roam free, and an ordinary shopping trip can turn into a side quest involving vintage video games, cosplay accessories, and a suspiciously large number of dice.

Hawthorne has long been one of Portland’s most eclectic, walkable shopping and entertainment districts, with independent shops, neighborhood restaurants, bookstores, bars, and a historic movie theater. In other words, it’s the perfect habitat for nerds of every species. Citation: Travel Portland’s Hawthorne guide.

Grab your dice bag, charge your phone, and leave a little room in your backpack. We’re going on an adventure.

10:00 AM — Brunch Beyond the Final Frontier

First stop: Space Room Lounge

Why settle for a boring brunch when you can launch your day into orbit? Space R

oom Lounge is a space-themed bar and grill with fabulous artwork, cosmic vibes, and a Sunday drag brunch that deserves a place on your social calendar. It’s the kind of place where breakfast comes with a side of intergalactic fabulousness.

Pro tip: If Sunday drag brunch is the main event, check the schedule and plan accordingly. The universe does not guarantee walk-in seating.

11:30 AM — Gear Up

Every hero needs a look. Every villain needs a look. And every cosplayer needs Metro Boutique.

This is your stop for costumes, wigs, accessories, and alternative fashion, whether you’re building a screen-worthy cosplay from the ground up or just looking for something delightfully extra for your next convention, party, or festival.

Ready to switch from intergalactic glam to punk-rock Portland? Another State of Mind brings the attitude, with alternative clothing and accessories for those who prefer their style with a little more rebellion and a little less royal decree.

It’s a reminder that geek culture isn’t one aesthetic. It can mean elaborate armor, anime-inspired fashion, band tees, boots, spikes, or whatever.

One all-in-one shop for Pokemon/TCG & Sports Cards, Lego, Hot Wheels & Matchbox diecast, Comics, Funko Pop products and rare pop culture collectibles.

1:00 PM — The Great Hawthorne Loot Run

Attention, collectors, button mashers, card slingers, and people who still insist that the original console was the best console: It’s time to investigate the gaming loot.

ThunderKitty Games and Hawthorne Game Exchange are stops for anyone whose idea of retail therapy involves games, gaming culture, and the possibility of discovering something that will make their inner twelve-year-old lose their mind.

Whether you’re hunting for your next favorite game, revisiting an old obsession, or trying to convince yourself that the collection is already complete, allow time to browse.

For the literary nerds and fiber-art wizards, Backstory Books & Yarn offers a different kind of treasure hunt: used books, recycled yarn, and the promise of a cozy afternoon spent getting lost in another world. It’s an especially satisfying stop for anyone who believes that a bookshop and a craft store are both portals to alternate dimensions.

You may arrive looking for a novel and leave with enough yarn to knit a dragon. No judgment.

Optional side quest: Martian Arts Tattoo

Martian Arts Tattoo brings body art into the neighborhood adventure, offering a chance to explore tattoo artistry and think about the stories we choose to carry with us. Whether you’re planning a full sci-fi sleeve or simply appreciating the artistry.

Walk in’s welcome

2:30 PM — A Little Retail, A Little Rebellion, A Lot of Noodles

Let’s be honest: nerds live on noods.

After hours of shopping, browsing, and mentally reorganizing your game collection, you need a proper recharge. Baka Umai Ramen House is ready to help, with ramen bowls that bring comfort, flavor, and the sort of restorative power usually associated with a well-timed healing potion.

Slurp responsibly. Or don’t. We’re not here to police your noodle technique.

Refreshment stop: Monster Tea

Every quest requires hydration, and not every beverage needs to be brewed by a wizard in a tavern. Monster Tea is a Pokemon themed bubble tea store serving a variety of milk teas and fruit-based drinks.

Grab a colorful drink, take a breather, and replenish your mana before heading back into the wilds of Hawthorne.

4:00 PM — Roll for Initiative

You’ve acquired loot. You’ve consumed noodles. You’ve achieved peak boba. Now it’s time to test your reflexes.

QuarterWorld, Where Change is Good!  Is an arcade and pinball paradise, with two full bars and all types of games. Staff picked selection of 30+ pinball machines and 60+ arcade games, ranging from classics to contemporary.

Challenge your party to a high-score showdown. Discover a forgotten arcade favorite. Or spend twenty minutes insisting that you absolutely had that shot before the pinball machine betrayed you.

Be sure to check out TESSI: THE MUSICAL TESLA COIL. On the First Thursday of every month.  Starts around 9:00p,

6:00 PM — Roll Into the Tavern

Eat, drink, and quest: TPK Brewing

If your ideal evening involves craft beer, tabletop games, and the possibility of saving a fictional kingdom, welcome to your natural habitat.

TPK Brewing is a tabletop role-playing game brewery with professional Game Masters running games for patrons. The taproom combines the atmosphere of a neighborhood tavern with a place to gather, play, and embark on adventures. TPK Brewing’s own website explains its game-master-led experience.

Whether you’re a seasoned dungeon crawler or a curious newcomer who still thinks a natural 20 is a very good year, TPK offers an easy entry point into the world of tabletop role-playing.

Order a drink, settle in, and let someone else worry about the plot twists for a while.

7:30 PM — The Show Must Go On

Time to trade the tavern for a little old-school cinematic magic.

The Bagdad Theater has been a Hawthorne landmark since 1927, with an iconic presence that makes it worth visiting even before the opening credits roll. It’s a classic neighborhood moviegoing experience with a distinctly Portland personality. Venture Portland notes that the Bagdad is also a stop on the Hawthorne Ghost Tour.

And yes, the theater has a haunted reputation. Is it a restless spirit? A ghostly projectionist? Someone who never got over the ending of their favorite movie? We make no claims about the paranormal. We simply recommend keeping an eye on the shadows.

Catch a movie, admire the historic atmosphere, and decide for yourself whether that strange noise came from the building settling or a spectral film critic expressing an opinion.

10:00 PM — The Final Boss of Nightlife

Late-night drinks: Bar of the Gods

Every epic journey needs a proper finale. On Hawthorne, that means Bar of the Gods.  Voted one of the best dive bars in america by Stuff Magazine.

Portland’s nerdy neighborhoods: geek culture isn’t confined to a convention hall or a single fandom. It’s woven into the everyday life of the city, one independent business and unexpected discovery at a time.

And Hawthorne is just the beginning.

Portland has more side quests than you can fit into a single weekend. So keep exploring, support the local businesses that make the city weird in the best possible way, and bring a friend who hasn’t discovered their inner nerd yet.

After all, Portland is Nerdy by Nature.

Live long and prosper.
